Dirt & Gravel Roads Program

In 1997, section 9106 was added to the PA Motor Vehicle Code.  The intent of this section was to fund safe, efficient, and environmentally sound maintenance of sections of dirt & gravel roads which have been identified as sources of dust and sediment pollution.

Program Goal: To reduce erosion, sediment, & dust pollution by using improved maintenance techniques that benefit both dirt and gravel roads and the environment.

Benefits: Reduced road maintenance costs (blading, regrading, & regraveling) and reduced sedimentation in water affecting aquatic life and drinking water reservoirs.

Statewide, there is over 18,000 miles of dirt and gravel roads, 32.9 miles can be found locally in Montgomery County.  Each year grant money is allocated for environmentally sensitive maintenance of dirt and gravel roads.  Municipalities have the opportunity to apply for the grant money to improve the quality of their dirt & gravel roads.
